Cell Phone Radiation, Side Effects and Health Risks

Radiation in cell phones and the health risks associated with that, have been a topic for discussion since the booming trend of mobile technology. Some people believe the radiation emitted can potentially be extremely dangerous for cell phone users. Still, others contend that the amount of radiation emitted from a cell phone, is too small to cause health problems for the users. By simply having a cell phone on and using it on a regular basis, users of cellular telephones are exposed to electromagnetic radiation. The electromagnetic radiation is there to help the phone commit basic functions such as sending and receiving: calls, texts, pictures, videos, and data. Cell phones send signals through radio waves, which are made up of radio-frequency energy that is coincidentally a form of electromagnetic radiation. The common thought is that cancer can be brought on by overexposure to the radiation in cell phones. However, no conclusive evidence has been found on the matter that would link cancer to cell phone use. One reason there is concern over the use of cell phones, is because they are held on the ear and next to the brain during use. This can put the radiation from the cell phone in directly in touch with tissue in the cerebral area. Some alleged effects of exposure to radiation from cell phones are: blood-brain barrier effects, cognitive effects, genotoxic effects, and sleep effects. There is evidence that supports both arguments, but none of which has been conclusive. The topic is also a rising debate for lobbyists in the United States. The film 2005 film 'Thank You for Smoking', starring Aaron Eckhart as the lead lobbyist for Big Tobacco, touches on the issue of cell phone radiation in the end of the film. A few nervous cell phone company executives sit around a table, and express their concern for the public outrage of the potential health risks of the radiation in cell phones. The lobbyist, Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), calmly tells them to deny all claims; citing that there have not been enough studies done on the matter to come to a conclusion. All in all, it is still uncertain whether or not there are major health risks with the radiation in cell phones.
